Watch Out! Canelo Plans To Stay On Top
Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (56-1-2) stops Billy Joe Saunders (30-1) after the eighth round and is now one step closer to becoming boxing’s first undisputed super-middleweight champion of the world.
On May the 8th, 2021, in Arlington, Texas, history was being written as Canelo defeats Saunders via TKO (corner stoppage) after the eighth round. The Mexican star lands a vicious uppercut, leaving Saunders’ right eye practically swollen shut. This is due to the fractured eye socket sustained by Saunders’ after receiving the uppercut. Referee Mark Calo-oy had no choice but to stop the fight as Saunders can’t see through his right eye. Canelo again proving he is undisputed and not one to be messed with.
Saunders, to his credit, had frustrated Canelo with his slippery southpaw skills, but unfortunately his spirited resistance and willpower was suddenly broken by the four-weight champion who cemented his status as the sport's No.1 fighter.
Now, the missing piece of Alvarez's undisputed glory, would come in the form of a match against IBF title holder Caleb Plant, as he is planning to stay at 168 through 2022 and beyond.
