The Long-Awaited Trilogy Is Finally Here

This week the boxing world is gearing up to see the long-anticipated trilogy bout between Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Gennady "GGG" Golovkin at the T-Mobile arena in Las Vegas, Nevada! This is your fight preview for this week by Hawkeye Fightwear.

Let us first recap what happened in their last two meetings, shall we? Canelo and Golovkin's first bout took place on September 16th, 2017. Gennady was the undefeated unified IBF/WBC/WBA middleweight champion going into that fight, while Canelo had a legitimate claim to be the lineal middleweight world champion. The fight ended in a disputed draw, with most observers believing Golovkin deserved to win. The rematch occurred almost a year later, on September 15th, 2018. The IBF had stripped Golovkin; therefore, it was his unified WBC/WBA claim vs. Canelo's legal lineal claim. Canelo was awarded a 12-round majority decision in a very close and challenging fight, where many experts believed Golovkin deserved to win, but this decision was significantly less contentious.

The two boxers appeared on opposing roads since their previous meeting four years ago. Golovkin has gone 4-0 since the rematch, including a win over Sergiy Derevyanchenko, and most recently won a unification contest against Ryoto Murata to earn the WBA championship. Canelo has a 7-1 record, winning a middleweight unification bout against Daniel Jacobs, the WBO light heavyweight title against Sergey Kovalev, and beating Callum Smith, Billy Joe Saunders, and Caleb Plant - three undefeated super middleweight titlists - to become the first undisputed world champion in the 168-pound weight class. Canelo's most recent fight ended in a unanimous decision loss to Dmitry Bivol for the WBA 175-pound title.

Gennady Golovkin is 40 years old. Gennady is no longer the feared man he once was, and his abilities have deteriorated slightly since they last met four years ago. Gennady is also a professional middleweight; therefore, this is his first fight at 168 pounds. On the other hand, Canelo is coming off his first loss in a long time and is hungry for a victory, making this trilogy much more exciting.

In the undercard, Gabe Rosado, famously known as the boxer who starred in the movie "Creed" as Leon Sporino & know for his knockouts, and underdog personality, returns to action to face off against Ali Akhmedov, who won a pair of fights inside the distance in 2021 in California to re-establish his road to significant championship fights after losing a final round KO to Carlos Gongora in their IBO title fight in December 2020. The hard-hitting 27-year-old will be hoping to impress against the Philly star on the largest of stages.

Rosado (26-15-1, 15 KOs) had rousing success against his final Eastern European opponent, landing a knockout of the year contender with a devastating right hook to crush the unbeaten Uzbek rising star Bektemir Melikuziev in the third round of their June 2021 bout in El Paso.

This will be an exciting week for boxing fans worldwide as we see two middleweight clashes to earn boxing supremacy and secure their legacy in the world of professional boxing.
