Our Take On UFC 275 & Holywings Sports Show 2

Our Take On UFC 275 & Holywings Sports Show 2

Last Sunday was a treat for fight fans as we got two mega-events in one day. In the morning was UFC 275, headlined by a light-heavyweight title defense. First, glover Texeira lost his belt by submission to the dangerous striker Jiri Prochazka. Next, Valentina Shevchenko lost a round in a fight against Taila Santos and overcame adversity with technique and skill to retain against the tough Brazillian. Finally, former strawweight queen Joanna Jędrzejczyk announces her retirement in the octagon after suffering a spinning back fist finish against former champion Zhang Weilli.

There was also a tournament that featured Indonesia talent from One Pride MMA that competed in the "Road To UFC" tournament. The winner will receive a UFC contract. Five fighters from Indonesia competed: Jeremy Siregar, Rama Suphandi, Gugun Gusman, Angga, and Jeka Saragih, with the latter the only one standing to advance to the semi-finals; the others lost in the first stage of the tournament.

The event was successful as the Singapore crowd was treated to an excellent card filled with top UFC names. Both title fights were filled with exciting ground and the top exchanges between the light-heavyweights and the flyweights. Weilli Zhang also proved that she is still in full title contention and ready to go for another shot at the strawweight title. Prochazka is now the leading man in the light-heavyweight division and was celebrated when he landed in his hometown. Next for him is either a rematch against Glover or a fight against the former reigning champion, Jan Blachowicz.

With the announcement made by Joanna after the loss, many will miss the strawweight superstar as she always delivered on skill and entertaining fights. She was a dominating champ with a lot of charisma and was known to trash talk her opponents when she was the reigning champ. She will go down as the best women's strawweight of all time and make it to the UFC Hall Of Fame in the coming years.

We move on to the world of combat sports in Indonesia, as later in the evening, Holywings, the big entertainment and F&B group, made a boxing event after the success of their first event titled "Holywings Sports Show 2" featuring many celebrities and pro-boxers competing in the ring in front of the Indonesia crowd.

The event was mostly filled with B-list celebrities and influencers. Except for Nikita Mirzani and EL Rumi, both are still popular names in Indonesian entertainment. Prodigy boxer Sunan Agung continues his dominance, and Andicka Mamesah and Theodorus Ginting finally fight each other, albeit in boxing rules instead of MMA.

Overall, the event combines entertainment at the level of a standard circus featuring gimmicky fights, a generic Indonesian show format with the host giving out corny jokes and not knowing what to do in a fight event, and pro-boxing judging that is questionable.

We will not dive deep into the celebrity fights as they are what they are: entertainment fights. Also, we will not dive into the headgear issue because we have addressed it on our social media.

Here's the takeaway of the whole HSS 2 Event in short:

  • Nikita Mirzani surprised everyone when she boxed Dinar Candy with an excellent Jab & Straight and superb footwork for someone who does not box.
  • El Rumi fought his ass off after suffering two rounds of beating from Winson Reynaldi
  • Sabian Tama (Technical Issues Aside) got dominated by Nicholas Sean, who is surprisingly jacked and filled with power.
  • Mark De Mori is a force to be reckoned with, all power, all technique.
  • Judging in the event is still horrible.
  • And Finally, Theodorus Ginting retires with a win against Andicka Mamesah and proves he is one of the best fighters in the Indonesia welterweight circuit.

We want to wish both Joanna and Theo a happy retirement!! We hope both of you are having a great time for the rest of your journey!
