Old Dogs Makes It More Entertaining Than Ever
Last Sunday, Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal rekindled their rivalry on Saturday night, meeting once again after their initial clash in 2019 for the UFC BMF championship. Unlike their previous encounter in the Octagon, this rematch took place in the boxing ring. This time, it was Diaz who emerged victorious by decision, this was though to be a cash grab to some fans as both fighters have moved past their prime, but some fans though that this fight will be an entertaining scrap between two old striking veterans giving it all for the fans, which they actually did.
The fight was a back-and-forth punching scrap with technique, grit, and more of anything goes, showcasing Diaz's relentless volume punching and forward movement against Masvidal's powerful and explosive strikes. Depending on your preference, the fight could have been scored in favor of either fighter. Masvidal often found himself backed against the ropes, where Diaz unleashed a flurry of punches with little concern for power. In contrast, Masvidal delivered powerful looping shots from an unexpected southpaw stance. Despite Diaz throwing more punches, Masvidal landed more with a 182-151 advantage.
After ten rounds of intense action, the judges awarded Diaz a majority decision with scores of 95-95, 97-93, and 98-92.
"It feels good to get the job done, for sure," Diaz said, showing respect after a heated buildup to the fight. "Mission accomplished. ... I could feel the love out here in Cali every time. Shout out to California. It's whatever. It's always been respect for anybody who is fighting." Looking ahead, Diaz mentioned potential boxing rematches, including one with Jake Paul, who defeated him in 2023, and a return to the UFC to challenge welterweight champion Leon Edwards. "I'm going to beat Jake Paul's ass and I'm down to fight the highest-ranked boxer I can find," Diaz said. "My main objective is always to be the best fighter in the world, so I want to go back to the UFC. Leon Edwards, Jake Paul, and anybody else, you're dead."
On the same card, Shane Mosley Jr. secured a significant win over veteran Daniel Jacobs by decision. Jacobs, returning to the ring after a long hiatus since 2022, struggled against his younger opponent. Additionally, former MMA fighters Chris Avila and Anthony Pettis faced off, with Avila winning by a clear decision over six rounds.
Honestly, we prefer these kinds of fight, matching up old veterans that have a similar style, also enough star power for people to get behind, giving us more than just a fight, buat a surefire night filled with entertainment combining old stars with still a lot of gas in them, and also showcasing young talent in the undercard, heck, we even got Ryan Garcia’s brother fighting, though he did not get the victory.
In a world filled with influencer boxing and circus type of matchup or just the best fighting the best, it’s nice to see these kinds of event, showcasing the fight world is as dynamic as it can be, that any fighter can step up to give the best as long as they have the heart to do it, maybe in the future, this event can inspire the local scene the deliver a boxing match featuring MMA fighters, or maybe a kickboxing match, or any match that seems logical, plausible, and better yet, make a profit out of it.
As for, Diaz’s future, it seems as though he is still a top draw wherever he is competing, his fighting career can still go about 5 to 10 years, he has build his brand image and value to the higher level after the first Mcgregor fight, positioning himself as a fighter with no-nonsense and seeking the biggest challenge there is, while Masvidal, is struggling to keep his worth in the fight game, but truth be told, the man has earned his stripes in the business, so a retirement is well deserved for the so called “Street Jesus”. What do you think will face off next
