What A F*cking Sunday.
Fight fans were given a treat better than an ice cream sundae from Haagen-Daz as two of the biggest pay-per-views in 2021 were aired on the same day and at the same time. Canelo Alvarez & Caleb Plant met on the same night where UFC 268 features Justin Gaethje versus Michael Chandler, Rose Namajunas versus Weili Zhang for the strawweight strap, and Colby Covington faces off against Kamaru Usman for the welterweight gold. Both cards were delivered as promised in the advertisement.
Let’s start with Boxing, shall we? Saul “Canelo” Alvarez performed like a champion as he stuck to his gameplan against a very game, ferocious Plant that went all the way to defeat the Mexican. Plant throws plentiful of jabs and blocking Alvarez’s lead hook and right hand from the first round to the last, Canelo stuck to his gameplan as he waited and throws precision shots to the body and the head that he invested in, assuring that Plant would be fatigued in the later rounds. It worked, and in the end, Canelo def. Plant via TKO after one knockdown at 1:05 of the eleventh round to become the undisputed super-middleweight champion. “It hasn’t been easy to get to this point,” Canelo said in his post-fight interview about achieving undisputed status.
Then we move to the world of Mixed Martial Arts as UFC 268 delivered in featuring fights that fans from casual to the experts enjoyed. It started with a Dynamite of war with Justin Gaethje and Michael Chandler. Chandler & Gaethje fought like their lives were on the line win Gaethje being the more technical fighter wins the fight by unanimous decision, followed by Namajunas retaining the strawweight strap against an adamant Weilli, who almost got the belt if Namajunas did not push the pace in the later rounds, and ended with Kamaru Usman defeating Colby Covington by unanimous decision to retain the UFC welterweight championship and ended with a post-fight interview respecting his rival. Usman then proclaims himself the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, and he then calls Covington the second-best guy in the division. Covington then admits that Usman had a better night and says that he “I ain’t done yet” and he’ll be back in the gym Monday.” Says Covington in the post-fight interview.
