Article: The Global Stage Once Again

The Global Stage Once Again

The Global Stage Once Again

Indonesia’s rich boxing history has seen champions rise from humble beginnings to claim world titles. From Ellyas Pical, the country’s first world champion, to the legendary Chris John, Indonesian fighters have left a mark on the sport. Now, in 2025, another fighter steps onto the global stage—Daud “The Senator” Yordan.

On March 22, 2025, Yordan will face George “Ferocious” Kambosos Jr. at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney, Australia*. This 12-round super lightweight bout is not just another fight; it is a chance for Indonesia to remind the world that its fighters still belong at the highest level.

Indonesia’s boxing history began its rise in the 1980s, when Ellyas Pical became the *IBF Super Flyweight Champion in 1985, making him Indonesia’s first world boxing champion. His explosive power and relentless fighting style paved the way for future generations. A few years later, Nico Thomas followed by winning the IBF Minimumweight title in 1989, proving that Indonesian boxers could succeed on the international stage. However, no fighter brought more sustained dominance than Chris “The Dragon” John, who held the WBA Featherweight title for over a decade (2003-2013), successfully defending it against top-tier opponents from around the world.

Now, Daud Yordan, a former IBO Featherweight and Lightweight champion, carries that legacy forward. At 37 years old, he remains determined to prove that experience and heart can still overcome youth and power.

This fight between Yordan and Kambosos has been in the works for nearly seven years. According to MPRO International President Gustiantira Alandy, the fight was originally planned in 2018, but circumstances led Yordan to take a different path, fighting Anthony Crolla instead. Now, both fighters meet as former world champions, making this one of the biggest Indonesia vs. Australia boxing matchups ever. With Matchroom and DAZN promoting and broadcasting* the fight, the world will be watching.

Yordan’s opponent, George Kambosos Jr., is no stranger to elite competition. The 31-year-old Australian once held the IBF, IBO, WBA, and WBO lightweight titles, and famously defeated Teofimo Lopez to win them. Despite recent setbacks, including a loss to Vasiliy Lomachenko, Kambosos remains a dangerous fighter, especially with the home crowd behind him in Sydney.

However, Yordan is no easy opponent. He recently claimed the *IBA world title in September 2024, proving he still has what it takes to compete at a high level. Training  twice a day while balancing his duties as a member of the Indonesian Senate (DPD-RI), Yordan remains focused and disciplined.

"I will come, fight, and bring home the victory,” he declared.

Win or lose, *this fight is more than just another bout. It is a statement that Indonesia is still a force in the boxing world. If Yordan pulls off a victory, it could spark renewed interest in Indonesian boxing, motivating younger fighters to aim for international success.

This is not just a personal fight for Daud Yordan—it is a fight for Indonesia’s boxing legacy. On March 22, 2025, the world will be watching.
